Design of the 2013 Silver Coin
Designed by Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt, the obverse of the silver coin is a beautiful profile portrait of the esteemed Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II . The queen's name is listed above her portrait on the coin, which reads "Elizabeth II." Located below her is the coin's face value and minting year which read "8 DOLLARS 2013."
The reverse of the 2013 1.5 oz Canadian silver coin is an image designed by Germaine Arnaktauyok and symbolically represents Canada's northern arctic region. Above the great animal is an inscription for the country "CANADA." Underneath the image on the coin are inscriptions for the purity, metal type and weight which reads "9999" and "FINE SILVER 1 1/2 OZ ARGENT PURE." The animal is believed to be one of the few creatures that can survive in the harsh, frigid climate, although it is considered a vulnerable species with less than 20,000 supposed to currently be in the wild. In addition, Canada is home to one of the world's largest population.
Coins from the Royal Canadian Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint is one of the finest facilities in the world. Founded in 1908 to refine precious metals found in the Yukon Territories, the RCM operates two state-of-the-art facilities in Winnipeg and Ottawa today. The 2013 Canadian silver coin is only one of the many coins currently minted in this facility.
The Royal Canadian Mint is a Canadian Crown corporation, and operates under the legislative basis of the Royal Canadian Mint Act. The shares of the Mint are held in trust for Her Majesty in right of Canada. The Mint produces all of Canada's circulation coins and manufactures circulation coins on behalf of other nations. The Mint also designs and manufactures: precious and base metal collector coins; gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins; medals, as well as medallions and tokens. It further offers gold and silver refinery and assay services.
It also serves the public's interest while mandated to operate "in anticipation of profit", meaning that it functions in a commercial manner and does not rely on taxpayer support to fund its operations. Like private sector companies, the Mint has a Board of Directors consisting of a Chair, the President and CEO of the Mint and eight other Directors.
Traditionally, the President of the Royal Canadian Mint is known as the Master of the Mint. The current president is Ian E. Bennett, who was appointed to the position in June 2006 and was re-appointed to a further three-year mandate effective June 12, 2011. The Board of Directors, through the Chair, is accountable to the Minister of Finance (Canada). The Minister serves as the link between the Mint, Cabinet and Parliament.

Why Invest Now?
These are troubled times and silver has historically been the ultimate hedge against economic volatility and crisis. IRA accounts are traditionally dependent upon a select group of stocks, bond and/or mutual funds which are inextricably linked to the economy. And when the economy suffers, the value of many IRA accounts begins to plunge. Precious Metal, including gold and silver coins, on the other hand has outperformed the Dow by over 300% over the past decade which begs the question ... why wouldn't you protect a portion of your retirement and secure your accumulated savings by adding a 2013 Canadian silver coin?
For centuries, investors and collectors have owned physical metal, including the 2013 Canadian silver coin, for a variety of reasons. Silver coins are:
- Considered a potential hedge against inflation and an eroding dollar
- Internationally recognized as a monetary and financial asset
- Able to be passed on to future generations of children and grandchildren
- Setting records - some experts believe gold may see new highs in the future
