
Many nations have their trademark coin. The Canadians have the Maple Leaf. The South Africans have the Krugerrand. And we have the American Gold Eagle. Interestingly, the gold American Eagle has beaten these other coins in the popularity contest. Many attribute it to the magnificent design of the American Eagle gold coin. Thank Augustus Saint-Gaudens for that. He created the $20 gold coin the American Gold Eagle is patterned after.
Of course his doesn't have the nest of eagles on the reverse that the American Gold Eagle has. And the 2005 American Eagle gold probably-and somewhat sadly-is more popular than the famous sculpture's Double-Eagle design.
Still the pattern Saint-Gaudens arrived at has stood the test of time. And the gold American Eagle is the beneficiary. And it's likely that the American Eagle gold coin will remain the beneficiary for years to come.
