This prompted two brothers named Hezekiah and James Gifford to seize on the opportunity for establishing a new settlement there. As part of their journey out west, the brothers settled eventually in an area along the stagecoach route in between Galena and Chicago that bridged the Fox River. They named their new town "Elgin," for a beloved Scottish song. The history of Elgin includes many industrial booms. In 1866 a condensed milk factory was founded there by Gail Borden, which for a time made the area famous for its dairy products and butter. Dairy was eventually overtaken by fine watches. During the late 19th century the Elgin Watch Company became prominent. It was the largest watch company until the 1960s when it stopped production. Today, Elgin is among the fastest-growing cities in the area, yet still retains its peaceful suburban charm, and its vitality that makes it such a great place for precious metal and coin dealers to succeed.
