Fur trader Jean Nicolet was the original settler, and he was joined some decades later by Jesuit missionaries. European settlement was intermittent up to 1765. That year marked the arrival of Charles de Langlade with his family. Langlade settled permanently in Green Bay, an act which has led to him being considered Wisconsin's father and founder. The fur trade continued to play a central role in Green Bay's economy all the way up to Wisconsin's admission to the United States in 1848. Statehood refocused local industrial attention on timber harvesting. The arrival of the Chicago and Northwestern railroad in the 1860s gave Wisconsin a wide range of commercial and industrial opportunities. Green Bay remains a major industrial center today, with locals working hard in several different plants devoted to meatpacking and paper production.
