Honoring the world-famous Austrian Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

The Austrian Philharmonics Gold Coins are struck in 99.99% solid gold. The Austrian Philharmonic Gold 1oz, also called the Vienna Philharmonic, is a gold coin produced by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich AG.) The gold Philharmonic 1oz coin was created as a tribute to the internationally renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the world's most distinguished orchestras. First minted in 1989, the Austrian Philharmonic gold coins were noted as the best-selling gold coins in the world in 1992, 1995 and 1996, according to the World Gold Council.

This Austrian Philharmonic coin is remarkable with its modern design while still respecting European conservative values. The obverse of the coin depicts the pipe organ in the Vienna Musikverein's Golden Hall. The reverse of the coin shows instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic, including Vienna horn, bassoon, harp and four violins centered on a cello. The design was created by the chief engraver of the Austrian Mint, Thomas Pesendorfer. The design of the Vienna Philharmonic coin remains the same each year; only the year of issue changes.

History of the Vienna Philharmonic Coin

The gold Vienna Philharmonic was first available on October 10, 1989. Initially, it was minted in two sizes: one troy ounce and one quarter ounce. The one tenth and one half ounce coins were added in 1991 and 1994 respectively. All coins feature the same design with the only difference being the weight and face value shown. In 2014, a 1/25 ounce coin was added with a face value of €4.00.

The popularity of the Vienna Philharmonic grew quickly: in 1990, the coin was the best selling in Europe and second in the world. In 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2000 the World Gold Council declared it the best-selling gold coin in the world. Since its introduction in October 1989 and through 2012, more than 14 million Vienna Philharmonic coins have been sold for a total weight of 9.6 million ounces or approximately 329 tons of gold. Currently, production numbers are driven by demand each year and fall between 100,000 and 200,000 coins because of popularity.

Why Invest in the Austrian Philharmonic?

These are troubled times and gold has historically been the ultimate hedge against economic volatility and crisis. IRA accounts are traditionally dependent upon a select group of stocks, bond and/or mutual funds which are inextricably linked to the economy. And when the economy suffers, the value of many IRA accounts begins to plunge. Gold on the other hand has outperformed the Dow by over 300% over the past decade which begs the question ... why wouldn't you protect a portion of your retirement and secure your accumulated savings by adding Vienna Philharmonic gold coins?

For centuries, investors and collectors have owned physical gold, including the Austrian Philharmonic coin, for a variety of reasons. Gold is:

  • Considered a potential hedge against inflation and an eroding dollar
  • Internationally recognized as a monetary and financial asset
  • Able to be passed on to future generations of children and grandchildren
  • Setting records - some experts believe gold may see new highs in the future
