Coin enthusiasts around the globe have a heightened interest in the Canadian Maple Leaf compared to other world coins because of the precise qualities that the design entails. In fact, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is revered as one of the highest quality and most intricate gold coins in the world.
The coin carries almost the same exact same design from year-to-year, dating back to when it was first introduced in 1979. The design of the Maple Leaf coin is truly a recognizable feature. The front, or obverse, of the coin features the side profile of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscribed above the revered Queen of England is "Elizabeth II." Below the image of the Queen displays the dollar amount and the year the coin was minted. The reverse of the Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin features an illustration of its namesake, the Canadian Maple Leaf. Above the Maple Leaf displays "Canada." In 2013 and 2015 new security features were introduced. In 2013 a micro-engraved textured maple leaf as placed on a small area of the reverse side of the coin using laser technology. In the center of this mark is the numeral denoting the coin's year of issue, which is only visible under magnification. In 2015 radial lines were placed on the coin's background on both sides of the coin.
History and the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was first minted in 1979 and is one of the older coins available today. When the Maple Leaf was first produced, it contained .999 purity. This would last until 1982, when it was improved to .9999 fineness.
The Gold Maple Leaf comes in a collection of various weights and sizes, ranging from 1/20th oz. to 1 oz. and sometimes even larger. One of the most interesting pieces of history in the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was the introduction of 1/15th oz. size coins, released only in 1994. With a lack of demand for this unique new size, production was discontinued that very same year.
2007 was an extraordinary year for the Gold Maple Leaf, with the production of a $1 million dollar Canadian Gold Leaf Maple gaining international attention. Although there have been several special releases of the Gold Leaf Maple over the last few decades, this was one of its most memorable achievements. This publicity created an even greater demand from both investors and collectors alike.

IRA accounts are traditionally dependent upon a select group of stocks, bond and/or mutual funds which are inextricably linked to the economy. And when the economy suffers, the value of many IRA accounts begins to plunge. Gold on the other hand has outperformed the Dow by over 300% over the past decade which begs the question ... why wouldn't you protect a portion of your retirement and secure your accumulated savings by adding a Canadian Maple Leaf?
For centuries, investors and collectors have owned physical gold, including the Maple Leaf coin, for a variety of reasons. Gold is:
- Considered a potential hedge against inflation and an eroding dollar
- Internationally recognized as a monetary and financial asset
- Able to be passed on to future generations of children and grandchildren
- Setting records - some experts believe gold may see new highs in the future
