The obverse of this gorgeous coin features the profile of France's "Lady Liberty," a symbol of the nation's Third Republic, which spanned from 1870 when Napoleon III was defeated in the Franco-Prussian War until World War II. (Today France is controlled by the Fifth Republic.) Framing the classic head are the words "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE."
The reverse depicts the jaunty, fully plumed Gallic Rooster, a symbol of France's revolutionary fighting spirit drawn from Medieval French imagery and adopted as a banner of the French Revolution in 1789. The rooster is seen today on French stamps and the insignia of French national sports teams. Framing the rooster is LIBERTE, EGALITE, FRATERNITE (Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood), the motto of the French Revolution.
