5 Ways the Midterm Elections Could Create a Bullish Backdrop for Gold

by Kathrynn Ward • October 29, 2026

The 2026 midterm elections are almost here, and investors are watching closely to see how the balance of power in Washington could change.

But for gold, the most important development may not be who wins on Election Night.

It may be what happens afterward.

The World Gold Council recently examined the potential impact of the 2026 midterms on gold and found that several possible post-election developments could create a more supportive environment for the precious metal. Historically, gold has responded more to the economic, fiscal and monetary consequences of elections than to the election results themselves.

Here are five reasons the midterms could ultimately create new tailwinds for gold.

1. Government Spending and Deficits Could Put More Focus on Gold

After the election, decisions around spending, taxes and government borrowing could move even closer to the center of the market conversation.

Congress plays a central role in determining federal spending and revenue, which means changes in congressional control can influence the direction of future fiscal policy.

For gold investors, the key question is what those policies ultimately mean for deficits, federal debt and government borrowing.

The World Gold Council notes that the fiscal implications could cut both ways: a shrinking deficit could create a headwind for gold, while renewed deficit expansion could provide further support.

Persistent deficits require the government to continue borrowing, adding to an already elevated federal debt burden. Over time, concerns about rising debt and heavy borrowing can affect Treasury markets, inflation expectations and confidence in the long-term purchasing power of the U.S. dollar.

Those are all factors that can strengthen the case for holding gold.

So while the election itself may not determine where gold goes next, the spending and deficit decisions that follow could become an important catalyst for the metal.

2. Lower Treasury Yields Could Become a Tailwind for Gold

The Treasury market could be one of the first places investors see the consequences of the election. Gold does not pay interest, so higher Treasury yields can sometimes create competition. However, the reverse can also be true.

If political gridlock reduces expectations for new spending, economic growth weakens or investors begin anticipating lower interest rates, Treasury yields could move lower, and that could remove one of the major headwinds gold has faced.

The World Gold Council specifically identified weaker growth expectations, lower yields and potentially a weaker dollar as conditions that could support gold.

A separate analysis of the connection between the midterms, Treasury yields, the dollar and gold also points to the bond market as one of the key transmission mechanisms following the election. Changes in expectations for federal borrowing can move Treasury yields first, with the dollar and gold potentially responding afterward.

3. A Weaker Dollar Could Increase Demand for Gold

The midterms could also influence the U.S. dollar.

If the election leads markets to expect slower growth, lower Treasury yields or greater concern over government borrowing and deficits, the dollar could weaken. Recent market analysis notes that yields driven higher by stronger growth can support the dollar, while yields rising because of fiscal concerns can have the opposite effect.

That could matter for gold in two ways.

Because gold is priced globally in dollars, a softer dollar can make it more affordable for buyers using other currencies, potentially supporting demand. Dollar weakness can also encourage investors and central banks to diversify away from dollar-denominated assets.

4. Pressure on Stocks Could Increase Interest in Diversification

The election could also affect one of the most powerful themes in today’s stock market: artificial intelligence.

The World Gold Council specifically identifies changes to AI regulation as one potential post-election factor for gold.

Changes in congressional control could alter the regulatory environment or government support surrounding the industry at a time when investors are already closely scrutinizing the enormous amount of capital flowing into artificial intelligence.

If those concerns put additional pressure on technology stocks, the effects could spread well beyond Silicon Valley.

Technology companies represent an unusually large portion of major U.S. stock indexes. A meaningful correction could weaken household wealth, slow spending and increase demand for diversification.

For investors heavily exposed to stocks, that could make gold’s historically different behavior especially relevant.

5. Washington Could Enter a New Period of Policy Uncertainty

Markets generally prefer clarity.

A shift in congressional control could make the direction of federal policy less predictable, particularly if the White House and Congress find themselves increasingly at odds.

The World Gold Council notes that greater congressional constraints could encourage wider use of executive powers, potentially increasing legal, political and policy uncertainty. Its analysis suggests those conditions could raise political and geopolitical risk premiums and potentially support gold.

That matters because gold has historically attracted interest when investors are looking for diversification during periods of elevated uncertainty.

The election does not have to produce a crisis to matter.

Even prolonged uncertainty over taxes, spending, trade or foreign policy could keep investors focused on assets that sit outside the traditional financial system.

The Election Could Be the Beginning of the Story, Not the End

History suggests investors should be careful about trying to predict gold prices simply by looking at which party controls the government.

But 2026 may be different in one important respect.

The World Gold Council also says today’s heightened geoeconomic environment could make markets more reactive than usual to the election and the policies that follow it. Its analysis says changes involving AI regulation, war funding and the use of executive power could provide support for gold even if some opposing forces remain.

Federal debt. Government spending. Treasury yields. The dollar. Stock-market risk. Geopolitical uncertainty.

And several of those forces could move in gold’s favor.

Could Today’s Pullback Be an Opportunity for Gold Investors?

There is another reason the timing of the midterms could be especially interesting for gold investors:

Gold prices have pulled back.

Gold was trading near $4,040 an ounce on October 28, and prices were down about 5.6% from a month earlier after coming off substantially higher levels earlier in the year. That means investors are currently looking at gold at lower prices than they were just weeks ago.

Short-term volatility is always possible, but many of the longer-term reasons investors have historically turned to gold remain firmly in place.

Government debt remains elevated. Inflation continues to affect purchasing power. Geopolitical uncertainty remains high. Central banks continue to view gold as an important reserve asset. And now the midterm elections could introduce another period of change around fiscal policy, Treasury yields, financial markets and the U.S. dollar.

If you believe those forces provide reasons for gold prices to move higher, today’s lower prices could represent an opportunity buy before the metal’s next major move. Call Lear Capital at 855-271-2873 to speak with a precious metals specialist and get the information you need before prices move.
