Beans, Bullets or Gold and Silver!

by David EngstromMay 16, 2013
A few days ago, a comment was posted to one of my articles, "I'll stick to my beans and bullets, and if you want to barter with me, you better have something besides gold."

Perhaps to the surprise of many, I agree with this persons strategy, at least in part, for surviving an end-of-the-world scenario. A time when civilization, as we know it, ceases to exist. Indeed, at such a time when a starving neighbor with a treasure trove of blankets, meets a freezing neighbor with a treasure trove of beans and bullets, each of whom would like to make a trade, gold will not play a role in the transaction.

But, what happens when each meets a person with a treasure trove of everything, who needs nothing but a means to store wealth? So it was in Biblical times when every day items were traded amongst the masses while gold and silver served as a means to accumulate and protect wealth.

To continue this discussion, however, of how one may or may not be able to survive on beans and bullets at the end of civilization, would be to miss the entire point of owning gold or silver to begin with. I do not aspire to grow up to be Fred Flintstone. I do not wish to live in a defended cave, cooking beans over an open fire. Rather, I would prefer I was one of those who had foresight enough to see the end coming and prepare for it.

Not everyone is going to be forced to live in a cave. Likely, those who will are going to be those who can no longer make a mortgage payment, a car payment, pay for electricity, heat and water, put gas in your car, propane in your tank and let's not forget taxes. Try to make these payments with beans and bullets.

It will be those who cannot make payments like these that will be forced to defend their store of rusty cans of beans from others who also failed to prepare in a manner that will preserve a way of life to which we have all become accustomed. There will be many phases between life as we now know it and the end of the world. As each phase descends upon us, like plague after plague, the separation between the "haves" and the "have nots" will widen.

Each wave of depression will send another wave of population to the caves. Those with the highest debt will go first. They will have the more difficult time of paying bills! Beans and Bullets won't cut it. Gold and silver will. The country is even preparing for it as state after state is either passing laws to make gold and silver money again or attempting to do so.

From one USA Today article, quoting a story from the Arizona Republic, "Some conservative lawmakers say they fear paper money could become virtually worthless because of federal debt." "Someday soon shoppers could conceivably be able to plunk down precious metal to pay for groceries, buy a new car or pay a traffic fine."  Arizona is about to pass laws that make gold and silver money again.

The question each must ask of themselves is which will you live among - the haves or the have nots? Is your portfolio betting on future economic bliss or are you preparing to survive when the can is finally kicked to the end of the road? Prior to the last market crash, the stock market peaked at 14,164.53 on October 11, 2007. Since then, it has risen a mere 8%, despite now trading at new record highs. In the same period, gold and silver, however, are trading up 90% in spite of their recent pullback.

The choice is yours. Mine is made! Can you guess?

If you share my opinion, and that's all it is, I humbly invite you to follow me @DaveTheGoldDR If you don't, shop Costco by the carton today.
